Super Mario Galaxy 2 1.4.0 update out now, patch notes – includes new story in story book - Nintendo Everything

Wait, Super Mario Galaxy 2 Just Got a Brand New Story? (1.4.0 Update)

I had to double-check my calendar when I saw this. Seriously, I thought it was April Fools' Day in May.

Nintendo just dropped a massive update for Super Mario Galaxy 2 out of nowhere. It is 2026, and we are getting new content for one of the best games ever made!

If you're a fan of this masterpiece, you know it's basically the gold standard for platformers. This update isn't just some boring "system stability" tweak either.

We are talking about real lore, new visuals, and a massive surprise for Switch 2 owners. Let's get into the good stuff.

Lubba’s Secret Backstory is Finally Here

The biggest thing in version 1.4.0 is a brand-new chapter in the storybook. Remember how the first game made us all cry over Rosalina’s past?

Well, Galaxy 2 is finally getting its own emotional gut-punch. This new chapter focuses on Lubba, our favorite big purple Luma.

It actually shows a younger version of Rosalina and explains how she and Lubba first met. I’m not crying, you are!

It is such a beautiful epilogue that ties up loose ends we’ve had since the Wii days. Grab some tissues before you start reading.

I won’t spoil it, but it adds so much heart to Lubba’s character. He’s always felt like he was hiding a deep secret, and now we know.

How to Unlock the New Chapter

You can't just open the game and see it immediately. There are a couple of things you need to do first.

First, make sure you have the "Final Chapter" available in your storybook. If you've beaten the game, you're already set.

Just go clear any galaxy and grab a Power Star. Once you finish the level, the new story will pop up in the library.

It’s the perfect excuse to hunt down those tricky Green Stars again. I forgot how much of a nightmare (and a blast) some of these levels are!

Floating around Starship Mario again feels like pure 2010 magic. Only this time, it looks way better.

4K Mario on the Switch 2 is Gorgeous

If you’re lucky enough to have a Nintendo Switch 2, your jaw is about to hit the floor. This update officially brings 4K resolution to the game.

Seeing these galaxies in crisp 4K feels like seeing them for the first time. The colors pop, and everything is so sharp it's almost unreal.

Nintendo even tweaked the lighting and water effects. It honestly looks like a modern game that came out yesterday.

The glow of the Lumas and the textures on the planets are stunning. It makes you realize how ahead of its time the art direction really was.

I spent twenty minutes just staring at the grass in the Tall Trunk Galaxy. Don't judge me until you see it for yourself.

Everything in the 1.4.0 Patch Notes

Here is the quick breakdown of what changed. It’s short, but it’s packed with heavy hitters.

The Nintendo Music app also got an update with this patch. They added the brand-new orchestral track from the storybook.

It has that sweeping, spacey feel that makes your heart swell. I’ve had it on repeat all morning while writing this.

It captures that sense of wonder that only a Galaxy game can provide. It's the perfect soundtrack for a rainy afternoon.

Go download it if you haven't already. It’s a literal trip down memory lane.
