Bethesda Broke It: Oblivion Remastered is STILL a Mess a Year Later
We all wanted this to be perfect. When Bethesda announced the Oblivion Remaster, fans literally lost their minds.
We dreamed of walking through Cyrodiil with gorgeous modern graphics and smooth gameplay. But one year after the shadow-drop, that dream is still a total nightmare.
Digital Foundry just released their one-year anniversary check-up, and honestly? It’s depressing.
The game is still broken at its core, and it feels like Bethesda has just moved on.
Digital Foundry's Brutal Verdict: "A Technical Mess"
The geniuses over at Digital Foundry didn’t hold back. They called the game "annoying" and even "unplayable" in some places.
The real problem is how the game actually works under the hood. It’s using a weird "wrapper" where Unreal Engine 5 handles the looks while the old 2006 code runs the actual game.
It sounds cool, but the two engines are basically at war with each other. This causes the game to hitch and stutter every time you try to move.
- Constant Stuttering: The game chokes every time you walk into a new area.
- Broken Frame Pacing: Even if you have high FPS, it doesn't feel smooth at all.
- Flying Physics: Items still zip across the room because the old engine is struggling.
The Infamous Memory Leak Is Still Here
This is the part that will really make you mad. The memory leak that ruined launch day is still exactly the same.
The longer you play, the worse the performance gets. You might start at a smooth 60fps, but give it an hour and you'll be crawling at 30fps.
Digital Foundry gave us proof that the game eventually just gives up and crashes to your dashboard. Nobody wants to restart their console every 40 minutes just to play a quest.
It makes long guild questlines like the Dark Brotherhood feel like a total chore instead of a fun adventure.
Even a PS5 Pro Can't Save You
You’d think throwing a $700 console at the problem would fix it, right? Nope.
Even the PS5 Pro struggles to keep a steady frame rate in Quality Mode. It’s not a hardware problem—it’s just bad code.
On PC, it’s even worse. Even if you have a monster rig with a Ryzen 9800X3D, you’re still going to see massive stutters.
The developers at Virtuos and Bethesda haven't touched the game since Update 1.2 back in July. It’s been total silence ever since.
Should We Be Worried About Fallout 3?
This failure has everyone sweating over the rumored Fallout 3 Remaster. It’s supposed to use the exact same UE5 technology.
If they can't fix Oblivion after a full year, what hope does Fallout have? Fans are already feeling a lot of "technical dread" about these classic remakes.
We want to see the Capital Wasteland in 4K, but not if it runs like a PowerPoint presentation. Bethesda really needs to show some respect to these legendary games.
Right now, the best way to play Oblivion is still the original version with community mods. At least the fans actually fixed the bugs.
The Final Word: Don't Buy It Yet
If you haven’t bought Oblivion Remastered yet, stay far away. It breaks my heart to say it, but it’s just not worth the headache.
Wait for a deep sale or a patch that actually fixes the performance issues. You deserve a version of this game that actually works.
Digital Foundry did us all a favor by calling this out. Hopefully, the backlash finally forces Bethesda to fix this masterpiece.
Until then, keep your gold in your pocket and stick to the original. The nostalgia isn't worth the crashes.
